RTD Zero Fare for Youth pilot program rolling out September 1st
Posted on Aug 16th, 2023
From Councilwoman Sawyer:
Earlier this year, Denver City Council and the DPS School Board successfully supported RTD in their Federal application to provide zero cost transportation to kids for a year. The pilot initiative launches September 1, 2023, and is called Zero Fare for Youth. EVERYONE 19 and under can ride FREE on ALL of the RTD system - trains, buses, FlexRide - anywhere in the RTD service area, any time, for the next year. The pilot will run from September 1, 2023 - August 31, 2024.
This pilot program not only shows our deep commitment to the future of our children, but also to the future of our planet. More people riding more often means less cars and less air pollution. It means less days of poor air quality. It means Coloradans in RTD’s service area will grow up using public transportation. It means more independence for kids and their families. It promotes access to a broader range of schools, after school programs, employment, better health care – the list of community benefits that this program brings is almost endless.
On a personal note, this pilot project is something I've been working on in partnership with DPS Board member Scott Baldermann and RTD Director Kate Williams for almost three years. It took a broad coalition of support from City Council, the RTD Board, the Federal Transit Administration, and the DPS Board - and especially the hard work of RTD CEO Deborah Johnson - to accomplish implementation of this program. It is really exciting to see the RTD Zero Fare for Youth pilot program rolling out and I'm honored to have played a role in it.
